A simple guide to how to do proper exegesis. Discusses bible translations. Separate discussion of the different kind of documents in the Bible: history, epistles, gospels, worship, wisdom, apocalyptic. Includes two excellent chapters on context and the difference between exegesis (uncovering the meaning) and hermeneutics (application today). 2. Who Wrote The Bible?
Richard Elliott Friedman, Harper, 1987, 1997
    ISBN: 0060630353
    Find it on Amazon - BookFinder4U - Campusi - Christianbooks.com - Ebay

An interesting book for the literate; a challenging book for the faithful. Looks at the Old Testament from the perspective of an historian. Where did these documents originate? Friedman sees each document as originating within the historical context of the divided nations of Israel and their respective priesthoods. Written as a "whodunit" with several missteps and backtracks, which makes for absorbing reading. An excellent introduction to the documentary hypothesis.

  3. Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism
John Shelby Spong, Harper Collins, 1991
    ISBN: 0060675187
    Find it on Amazon - BookFinder4U - Campusi - Christianbooks.com - Ebay

Written by an Episcopal bishop who does not believe in the virgin birth, the bodily ressurection of Christ, or any other physical miracles recorded in the Bible. Advocates the acceptance of homosexuality and the admittance of women to church leadership. Conservatives won't agree with anything in this book, but the book will give conservatives a solid understanding of the mindset of theological liberalism.

  4. A Little Exercise For Young Theologians

    ISBN: 0802811981
    Find it on Amazon - BookFinder4U - Campusi - Christianbooks.com - Ebay

In a nutshell: why those in Bible college or seminary, or recently graduated, should not be admitted to teaching positions until they have seasoned a bit. Why theological bickering is not conducive to healthy church life. How such discussions originate in pride.

Shows how the Bible stories are increasingly supported by archeological evidence. Written in language that even an older child can understand, but interesting to adults as well.

    ISBN: 0679450890

The set that turned my life around and reminded me what the Reformation was all about, and how far I had strayed from it.
