An interesting book for the literate; a challenging book for the faithful. Looks at the Old Testament from the perspective of an historian. Where did these documents originate? Friedman sees each document as originating within the historical context of the divided nations of Israel and their respective priesthoods. Written as a "whodunit" with several missteps and backtracks, which makes for absorbing reading. An excellent introduction to the documentary hypothesis.

Written by an Episcopal bishop who does not believe in the virgin birth, the bodily ressurection of Christ, or any other physical miracles recorded in the Bible. Advocates the acceptance of homosexuality and the admittance of women to church leadership. Conservatives won't agree with anything in this book, but the book will give conservatives a solid understanding of the mindset of theological liberalism.
