Chinese Horoscope

The word Zodiac comes from a Greek word that means "circle of animals." There are several forms of zodiacs that garner attention in various places around the world. The western zodiac, which is based on constellations of stars in the sky, includes several animals (ram, bull, crab, lion, scorpion, goat, fish) but not all of the signs are animals. The year is divided into 12 months, and each month is signified by one of the constellations.

The Chinese zodiac, which has wide currency in China, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan, has a time cycle divided into twelve years, and each year is signified by an animal. The animals of the Chinese zodiac are not associated with any stars or constellations.

The zodiac traditionally starts with the year of the Rat, followed by Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

There are also animal signs assigned by month, day, and hour. Those signs need not be the same as the year sign or any of the other signs.

In addition, there is a 10-year cycle of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). This makes possible 103,680 possible combinations of all animals and elements.

(5 elements x 12 years x 12 months x 12 days x 12 hours)

Different pairings of animal signs are supposed to suggest better or worse compatibility for couples and business relationships, etc.
